Eastern Connecticut Football Officials
If there is a more familiar official in the
Eastern part of Connecticut’s gridirons than
Gordie Mauer, members of the Eastern
Association of Approved Football Officials
would like to know. For 44 years Mauer has
traversed the fields of Eastern Connecticut,
earning a reputation as a solid and
dependable man in stripes.
A transplant from Iowa by way of New
Hampshire, Mauer played his high school
ball at Proctor Academy in Andover (NH)
before attending William Penn University in
Oskaloosa, Iowa. He was a four-year starter
for the Statesmen, and then migrated his
talents into football officiating. He worked
games in the Hawkeye State for three years
before moving to Connecticut, transferring to
the EAAFO.
He served on many committees for the
association, including Better Officiating, and
is currently the group’s historian. He served
an 11-year stretch on the executive board. He
also found time to “run the chairs” of the
organization, serving as president.
He was a member of the Eastern Association
of Intercollegiate Football Officials and
worked several seasons, doing Division II
and III contests.
He represented the EAAFO on the CFOA for
two years (2010-12), and has worked on the
group’s state clinic.
Over the years, Mauer has racked up 14
quarter- and semi-final games at various
positions, before being assigned a referee
for six more (2006-12), including a state final
in 2007.
Gordie and his wife Jeanine have been
married for 24 years and reside in Putnam.
They have three children Chad, Eric, and
Jennifer, and proudly boast about their two
fabulous grandsons Jake and Jack.
